The First and Greatest Commandment

Lots of thoughts, little space, and little time. Bear with me.

37 Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment…” -Matthew 22:37-38

Jesus commands us to do one thing… “Love Me with all that you are.” Not, “Don’t say cuss words.” Not, “Don’t lie to your parents.” Not, “Don’t cheat on your Science test.” Just, “Love me.”

When I first began to think about that, I thought to myself, “Wait a second, Jesus Christ is willing to die, just so that I can have life… and sometimes I’m not even willing to act like He exists, let alone love Him with all that I am.” The feeling that I had as I was thinking about that, was something that I have begun to long for. I was beautifully broken. I was at a place where all I could do was thank Jesus for who He is and ask Him to forgive me once more.

15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” -John 14:15

Not to undermine the consequences that the things that Jesus didn’t make His only commandment may have, but Jesus only had one greatest commandment. And in John 14, it says that, if we love Him we’ll do what He commands. What does He command? He commands that we love Him. Somewhere in this beautiful loop of love for our Savior and our Savior’s love for us, we will be driven to do everything that He asks of us.

We need to make it our our greatest priority as Christ followers to know our Savior inside and out. He knows everything about us and He is just dieing (literally) for us to know Him. I can only imagine the vastness of the worlds of opportunity that doing that would open up. And the only way we can do that is by growing our love for Him deeper, and deeper, and deeper.

I’m nowhere near where I should be, but I’m trying to make it there.
